Project Description

MPH collaborated with Yorkshire-based ACA Architects to build Suite 36 at Hull Royal Infirmary, a new prefabricated office workspace construction and interior fit. This was for Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in Hull Royal Infirmary. This project was part of the Trust Estate rationalisation program to improve efficiency and support the hospital’s evolving working culture.

Suite 36 is a second-floor office development designed to accommodate various health and well-being services. These include social workers from Hull City Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council, the Humber Mental Health Team, corporate nursing staff, patient experience personnel, and a call centre for patient referrals.

900sqm Open Plan Prefabricated Offices

Showcasing Modern Modular Interior Design

The scheme was completed as part of a design-based competition showcasing 900sqm of open-plan office space for 120 workstations, video conferencing facilities, meeting rooms, and modern design features.

Using design principles contained in WELL Building Standards, the layout was straightforward, with flowing circulation spaces, eye-catching interiors, and motivating environments to support health and wellbeing, including using a biophilic design ‘living wall’.

Brief Us

Energy Saving Prefabricated Office

For improved sustainability and to support the changing working methods, the new technology installed ensured accessibility and energy savings.

  • Standard-sized wall heights and ceiling layouts to accommodate standard-sized products, thereby mitigating waste.
  • Insulated walls reduce noise and regulate temperature.
  • Changing LED artwork complements the open and bright reception area.
  • Thermal control sensors in the windows for operating, glare control and thermal comfort.
  • Light sensors and LED fittings reduce energy usage and costs while increasing lifecycle.
  • Lighting closer to the perimeter has in-built photocells with units individually self-dimming in conditions where natural light negates the need for artificial light.
  • Sanitaryware is fitted with flow control restrictors, including waterless urinals, to reduce water consumption.
  • The lift features NGV valve control, which prevents overheating and, therefore, energy wastage.
  • Underfloor power distribution feeds into individual floor boxes, and a ‘powertrack’ busbar can be used for future connections.
  • Quooker taps are installed in the kitchen area to save water and energy compared with kettles.
