Design Challenges & Solutions

• CHALLENGE – Timescale: Due to Langford’s volume of new families, Langford Village Academy had an urgent requirement for more nursery care to support the local area. Their existing building was too small, so it needed remodelling and refurbishing. Also, they needed additional WC areas and utility rooms.
• SOLUTION: They chose a modular mobile build to extend their existing mobile nursery building. This build was a cost-effective way to expand the existing building and could be installed in tight timescales. During the refurbishment, we included the addition of new WC areas and utility rooms.

• CHALLENGE – Site Access Issues: The position of the new extension was at the rear of the existing school, which meant they had restricted site access. To access the site, we could only traverse down the single vehicular access route. Also, we would have to move across their playground during term time.
• SOLUTION: Our modular solution allowed a fast installation programme and reduced the amount of construction traffic over the course of the project. To achieve this, we designed modular sections to overcome the site constraints. Units were shipped on regular articulated vehicles then transhipped to smaller vehicles onsite to overcome the access issues. We worked with the school to minimise issues during playtimes, start times and end of school times.

• CHALLENGE – Health & Safety: The academy needed a build solution to minimise disruption to the school, and Health and Safety was their primary concern.
• SOLUTION: To overcome their Health and Safety issues, our smaller vehicles and modular build minimised construction traffic.

• CHALLENGE – Environmental: The nursery’s heating systems were uneconomical and outdated.
• SOLUTION: To improve eco-efficiency, we upgraded their existing heating systems to energy-saving air source technology.
