Project Description

Kirklees Active Leisure (KAL) gymnasium and health club was left in tip-top condition after MPH Building Systems completed a major upgrade of a facility at the heart of its community.

It was a definite case of survival of the fittest for the Spenborough Fitness Suite in West Yorkshire, when the closure of one of their nearby gym necessitated an expansion of the complex to welcome the anticipated influx of members.

Commencing in mid-November, the timescale on the project was made more pressing by the fact that the completion date was just before Christmas, and MPH were primed to ensure that the KAL hit the ground running to not only accommodate members from the recently closed gym but also the usual New Year’s increase in membership numbers.

The scale of this operation was extensive, entailing refurbishment of existing facilities as well as the introduction of both modular and traditionally built extensions.  MPH were appointed Main Contractor in a full turnkey package that included foundations work, landscaping and reconfiguration of the floor space within the complex.

A 225m² modular gym and exercise suite was installed along with a fitness studio fitted out with the latest sound and lighting systems. It is customary in spin classes for the instructor to be on an elevated podium, so a two-tier floor was installed to facilitate this. The male and female changing rooms and locker spaces were expanded with a full heat, vent and cool system incorporating CO₂ sensors. Such a job demands lateral thinking and one of the extensions also served as a linkway to the modular structure.

The client’s priority was to minimise disruption to existing members and keep the complex running smoothly throughout the programme of works. MPH delivered on this, implementing a carefully phased schedule of improvements, which enabled the gym to remain open for all but a negligible amount of time, when the changing rooms were being re-developed.

The handover was completed on 23 December, in readiness for Boxing Day opening, with the transformed KAL facility in great shape and poised to greet the wave of new members.
