Project Description
MPH designed, manufactured and installed an L-shaped modular classroom block as part of an SEMH school extension in Leicestershire. Located in Blaby, Leicester, the SEMH school was asked by Leicestershire County Council to accept additional pupils. To facilitate more pupils, they required additional classroom accommodation.
HISTORY: The Academy opened in 2020, initially to pupils within primary-aged year groups. Then, in September 2021, the provision was expanded to accept Upper School pupils with a capacity to provide 50 places for children across the full age range of 5-16 years. The school is a specialist all through school for SEMH pupils (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) aged from 5 to 15 years. Admission to the school is for pupils with an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) issued by the Local Authority. However, in 2023, when more places became necessary, a SEMH school extension became essential.
OUR BRIEF: A safe, enclosed, five-classroom extension was required, but there were obstacles. Firstly, the school faced access issues; it was located down a small access road surrounded by fields. Also, to be considerate of the SEMH pupils, site noise and disturbance needed to be kept to an absolute minimum.
With off-site construction to minimise noise and on-site build disruption, an L-shaped modular classroom block was the ideal solution for SEMH pupils.
5 Classroom SEMH Modular Extension

Proposed Site For Prefabricated L-Shaped Extension
The Construction of a new purpose-built teaching block to provide 5 new classrooms to complement the existing school and new MUGA hardstanding play area.
Designed to consider the end user and their requirements, The Academy’s brief was to create spaces to enhance the school by providing first-class education and highly tailored learning, allowing the pupils to be best prepared for life after school.
The Academy requested that the new building be situated on the grassed area at the front of the existing buildings, which was not used for recreational purposes. Therefore, this would not impact the play areas and leave full use of the playing fields to the rear of the school.
A new MUGA was built adjacent to this new building to provide the children with additional hardstanding and year-round play area. (the main contractor completed the MUGA).
Single Storey Modular Extension That Echos The Original Building

Single-Storey L-Shaped Design For SEMH Modular Extension
The architectural design of the new teaching block features an L-shape oriented towards the existing school structures and the MUGA area. A modular single-story extension was incorporated into the design to minimise the visual impact on the existing two-story school building and preserve its present views.
The new classroom teaching is a modular single-storey structure finished in bricks matched to the existing school.
For improved thermal efficiency, an insulated brick slip system was chosen to clad the building along with an insulated acrylic render system to protect the building and prolong its life while ensuring it was sympathetic to the existing traditionally built building stock.

Site Location & Sustainability For Prefabricated Extension
The new L-shaped classroom block is located at the front of the school, on a former grass area not previously used as a designated play area. Building on this land increases the school accommodation without impacting play space.
The layout had been designed to help create a safely enclosed teaching block which links back to the existing building through the newly created courtyard and MUGA play space. A layout to help safeguard the pupils and allow safe transfer across the site away from the parking spaces and visitors to the school. A new fit-for-purpose building, the new L-shaped extension, is constructed in line with the new Part L regulations to increase the thermal efficiency of the building.
Sustainable energy solutions were also featured, including photovoltaic roof solar panels and ASHP technology for the hot water throughout the building.

Off Site Construction Minimising Disruption For SEN Schools
The L-shaped units were constructed off-site using modular building techniques and later transported to the location for installation. This approach is ideal for SEN institutions, especially SEMH schools, as it eliminates manufacturing noise, minimises vibrations, and reduces the number of vehicles on site. It ensures maximum safety on site.
It also allows for a swift construction process, ensuring minimal disruption and stress. A further benefit is that the buildings are portable, so they can be moved or repurposed in the future to suit education needs and requirements.

The Ideal Construction Solution For SEMH Schools
Why modular buildings are a great solution for SEMH pupils
Providing an environment that fosters the growth and development of students with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs is of utmost importance. However, when faced with constrained budgets and limited time, constructing new buildings may not be a viable option.
Fortunately, MPH Buildings Systems presents a practical and efficient solution by offering high-quality modular buildings that can be tailor-made to enhance an SEMH facility. Investing in the design and construction of buildings with meticulous attention to detail is crucial in creating a safe and supportive environment for SEMH students.
Focusing on every aspect of the building, we can ensure that students have the best possible chance of success, allowing them to thrive both academically and personally.
By providing a purpose-built facility, SEMH students can get the support they need to flourish.
- Cost-effective construction solution
- Flexible for the future – portable and easily modified should the location or requirements change
- Fast and effective build process
- Minimal noise disruption
- Off-site construction reduces onsite disruption
- Sustainable energy efficient construction
