Project Description

MPH was awarded a contract to supply a new woodland classroom for a Blackpool Academy school and fulfilled the brief with a refurbished cabin. A renewed, bespoke, wood-look refurbished modular cabin in Lancashire was completed to the highest standards, providing considerable cost savings.

Refurbished Cabin Transformed To An Eco Classroom Pod In Lancashire For Blackpool Academy

The community academy in Blackpool required an eco pod upon a site that was difficult to access in a very short timescale. The solution was to customise a unit from our cabin stock and convert this into a modular classroom building.

The eco cabin classroom in Lancashire showcases a sustainable and cost-effective building. We successfully delivered this bespoke educational space to seamlessly align with the project’s budget, environment and designated timescale through the innovative use of a recycled and renovated prefabricated unit from our modular stock.

The Architect’s Brief

A Sustainable Eco Pod Designed With Nature In Mind Crafted On-Time, Within Budget

The classroom building at Park Community Academy was required as part of a wider strategy to develop other buildings across the school grounds. The classroom provides the additional classroom space to support the school during these works and is also located within their wildlife areas to facilitate classes that have a focus on nature and biodiversity.

The refurbished unit offered a more cost effective and high quality outcome than a new classroom. The modular method of construction meant that the process had minimal disruption on the school and could be delivered and installed within the school holidays.

The school are delighted with the final outcome which provides plenty of storage, lots of natural light and a modern clean finish. The whole process was well orchestrated with constant communication throughout the process and MPH worked hard to help us achieve a high quality learning environment in a short space of time

Overcoming Construction & Installation On A Constrained Site

We overcame difficult access issues at the build location through offsite construction and crane installation. The intended classroom site was located within a constrained area of woodlands, and the refurbished modular classroom was not accessible for articulated vehicles.

We carefully planned logistics, partnering with our crane and haulage contractors to offer a solution. Together, MPH and our haulage and crane contractors formulated a plan to lift the prefabricated components from a location over 45m away. This solution met health and safety compliance requirements and ensured a fast installation and build schedule within an inaccessible site.

The refurbished prefabricated eco classroom in Lancashire is a sustainable and cost-effective solution to both budget and access constraints.

Converting Disused Cabins Into Classrooms

We entirely redesigned and reconstructed a former marketing cabin building and refabricated it bespoke to the Academy’s specifications. Complete with a classroom, kitchen, and toilet facilities, the new modular construction in Blackpool underwent a full remodel, including a full internal and external refurbishment, as well as upgraded energy-efficient heating and lighting.

Timescale: 6 weeks from order to site completion

The Result & Client’s Feedback

A Woodland Classroom Designed To Blend With Nature

The modular woodland classroom unit was externally encased with slatted composite cladding. This gave it a wood-look, highly durable exterior that matched the existing buildings while remaining sympathetic to the surrounding woodland area.

We are delighted with our new modular classroom which we have now named the Eco Pod.

The need for this additional building arose from the continued expansion of the school site and a specific redevelopment project on one of our existing buildings, meaning one of our classes required a new home for the duration of this project.

The new classroom has exceeded our expectations in terms of quality, finish and facilities within the unit.

The team from MPH have been easy to work with, communicated well and adhered to deadlines, along with understanding the needs of our school.
