Project Description
MPH recently completed work on a series of modular classrooms for a local school. Batley Girls’ High School had an immediate and pressing need for an additional five English teaching classrooms and two Science teaching laboratories. The school did not have enough space to teach these core subjects and were being forced to teach in other parts of the school away from their respective departments.
MPH Building Systems provided a full turn key package to install two purpose built modular buildings on the school site. The programme included pre-construction services including:
- full planning application
- ground condition investigation
- drainage surveys
- foundation designs
- full contractors/utilities design
The construction phase included the design, supply, delivery and installation of the modular classrooms. We cleared the site in preparation for the build, dug foundations, and provided for incoming utility services and drainage. As the project came to completion, we carried out the final landscaping work and installed CCTV.
More teaching space for English Department
The 400m2 English Block included five 60m2 classrooms with offices. The new modular classrooms are all linked to the main school by a traditionally built glazed structure.
Existing school services including fire alarms, intruder alarms and IT infrastructure were all integrated into the existing site wide systems. Internally, folding acoustic partitions were installed to open up teaching spaces to provide flexibility for large activities and exam areas.
State-of-the-art science facilities
The 230m2 science classroom included two 90m2 fully fitted science labs, prep room and a lobby. Two different science lab layouts were designed to meet the individual needs of the school. The science lab fit out included gas detection systems and carbon monoxide monitoring to comply with the safe use of gas in educational buildings.
As the new science block was remote to the existing school building, a covered walkway was constructed to protect students from the wind and rain as they move between classes. Mechanical and electrical installations included air source heat pumps as the method of space heating, energy efficient water heaters, and an LED lighting scheme with controls. The M&E installation and insulated building fabric complied with Part L of the Building Regulations providing a highly energy efficient building and reduced running costs.
