Project Description

We were instructed to complete a replacement classroom funded by a successful CIF bid for an academy school in Warrington, Cheshire. The turnkey project involved designing and installing a 4-bay modular building. This included carefully demolishing the unsafe portable cabin in situ and controlling minimal disruption to the school environment. The building consists of a small classroom, an informal teaching space with kitchenette facilities, an office, and a disabled bathroom.

The Client’s Brief

Replacement Classroom For Cheshire School

The Kassia Academy was awarded a successful CIF bid in May 2023 to replace our tired, run down portable cabin, which was no longer safe to use.

MPH Building Systems were awarded the work to complete this project.

The project started in Summer 2023 and was fully completed, on time, by December 2023.

Replacement Of Old Temporary Cabin Classroom

Positioned off the playground to the rear of the main school, the replacement classroom provides multi-use and flexible accommodation for use by the school and local community groups.

To minimise disruption to the school, demolition was essential during the summer holidays. Then, after a short pause, the unit’s installation programme was completed during the next holiday break, within a 5-week site programme.

Bespoke Replacement Classroom Designed Fit For Purpose

DURABLE BUILDING DESIGN: Early in the design process, the client expressed the need for a flexible and robust building solution to fulfil the needs of the school and surrounding community organisations that would use the space after hours or during school holidays.

All internal partitions are ply-lined to provide extra durability and internal finishes were carefully chosen to provide a practical but welcoming space for all users.

DESIGN AESTHETICS: Externally, the replacement classroom building is clad with an insulated brick slip system to the front elevation.

Grey UPVC windows and aluminium doors, together with the anthracite grey fascia, black UPVC gutters and downpipes, complete the overall look of the building.

ACCESSIBILITY BUILDING DESIGN: Level access is provided to the main entrance off the playground to meet accessibility and disability requirements.

A Bespoke Portable Classroom With Insulated Silicon Clad Rear Elevation

To the rear, the temporary building was designed and installed with an insulated silicone render system to the gables and rear elevations.

The emergency exit was designed with step access to the rear to counterbalance the building on uneven terrain. These safety doors lead down to the soft landscaping and garden area to the rear of the building, beside playing fields—an area the school is keen to develop further over the coming months and years.
