Portable Building On A Sloping Site With Restricted Access

MPH designed, manufactured, and installed a new 7-bay modular classroom to replace an outdated unit. The school’s brief was to create a high-quality, modern learning environment that blended aesthetically with its natural, rural surroundings.

To address ongoing maintenance concerns and ensure the building fit seamlessly into its environment, the decision was made to use a low-maintenance cladding solution. This included a combination of insulated render and vertically applied timber grain fibre cement plank cladding in muted, earthy tones.

Site access posed a challenge, requiring the creation of a safe route across neighbouring farmland and over the sports field to the rear of the school. The build site itself was on a steep incline, with the land falling away sharply from the playground towards the boundary. Despite this, level access from the playground was essential. Working with a structural engineer, MPH designed a foundation featuring a raised steel gantry and a reinforced blockwork perimeter wall to support the building.

How To Replace A Building With Restricted Access On A Steep Site

OFFSITE CONSTRUCTION: Working within a very small school while teaching is live, offsite construction perfectly manages Health and Safety.

BESPOKE-SPECIFICATION: To work in harmony with a rural environment, custom-timber grain fibre cement cladding was used.

SLOPING SITE CONSTRUCTION: Working with a structural engineer, we designed a raised steel gantry and a reinforced blockwork foundation to balance the steep incline for a level structure.

The Curzon C of E Primary School is a smaller than average sized primary school, in Quarndon, Derbyshire. The school received a large106 section funding grant from a development in the local area. This allowed the school to enhance our facilities and build two additional classrooms, as well as office facilities, replacing tired and outdated classrooms.
