Project Description

Energy Efficient Modular Airport Buildings Supports Environmental Goals

Modular airport buildings are ideal to help meet aerospace challenges in supporting improved environmental goals. Sustainable in their manufacture, construction, and installation processes, they deliver eco-efficient buildings. Beyond the eco-factor, modular aerospace buildings offer adaptability, flexibility and portability. In the case of this project for East Midlands Airport, folding acoustic partitioning enabled the internal space to become even more flexible for their operational hub and airport training academy.

Project Overview And Design: East Midlands Airport

Replacement Modular Airport Facility For Airport Academy

The project involved the demolition of the existing Aerozone / Airport Academy building and the construction of a new modular facility on the same footprint. The replacement building will serve as a hub for airport operational offices and staff training activities.

Designed to support the airport’s ongoing growth and evolving training needs, the new facility prioritises modernity and energy efficiency. Key features include:

  • Flexible Conference Space: A large, adaptable area equipped with a folding acoustic partition, enabling either two separate meeting rooms or a single conference space accommodating up to 40 attendees.
  • Training & Support Areas: Two dedicated training rooms with perimeter worktops and capacity for 30 computer workstations, alongside trainer offices and a virtual meeting room.
  • Staff Amenities: Kitchen and mess facilities, ample WC provision, and storage areas sized to meet projected occupancy requirements.

Internal Finishes

Airport Academy Interior Design That Is Functional, Contemporary & Durable

All occupied areas (excluding plant and storerooms) received a tape, fill, and decorated wall finish. WC areas are lined with wipe-clean High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) boards for durability and ease of maintenance.

Additional interior design finishes include:

  • Marlings carpet tiles throughout the general areas
  • Altro walkway vinyl in WCs and storerooms
  • White lay-in suspended ceiling tiles across all internal spaces

External Design

Fire-Rated, Anthracite Grey Clad Building For Airport Modular Academy Hub

The building envelope features fire-rated, insulated plastisol steel cladding in Anthracite Grey and White, with White used to accentuate the main entrance.

White plastisol fascia boards provide a crisp, clean edge to the overall aesthetic.

Large glazed opening windows and aluminium doors maximise natural light, creating a bright and welcoming environment for staff collaboration.

Sustainability And Energy Performance

Supporting UK Airports In The Pledge To Roll Out Innovative Sustainability Strategies

Airports are increasingly making energy efficiency pledges, including commitments to achieve net-zero carbon emissions, as part of broader efforts to reduce their environmental impact. These pledges also involve measures aimed at improving energy efficiency, including renewable energy sources. Therefore, energy efficiency was central to the East Midlands Airport’s design.

Beyond the sustainable fabrication of the building itself, MPH Building Systems delivered a building with an A-rated energy performance. To further support the airport’s environmental goals, an 8-panel photovoltaic (PV) array was installed, with capacity for future expansion.
