MPH collaborated with Yorkshire-based ACA Architects to build Suite 36 at Hull Royal Infirmary, a new prefabricated office workspace construction and interior fit. This was for Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in Hull Royal Infirmary. This project was part of the Trust Estate rationalisation program to improve efficiency and support the hospital’s evolving working culture.
Suite 36 is a second-floor office development designed to accommodate various health and well-being services. These include social workers from Hull City Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council, the Humber Mental Health Team, corporate nursing staff, patient experience personnel, and a call centre for patient referrals.

“As trust staff spend most of their time indoors, the initial brief was to create a working environment with high specification which is accessible, sustainable, and stimulating for staff to enjoy and feel proud to work in”

The scheme was completed as part of a design-based competition showcasing 900sqm of open-plan office space for 120 workstations, video conferencing facilities, meeting rooms, and modern design features.
Using design principles contained in WELL Building Standards, the layout was straightforward, with flowing circulation spaces, eye-catching interiors, and motivating environments to support health and wellbeing, including using a biophilic design ‘living wall’.

Open-plan meeting spaces are designed to encourage spontaneous meetings and collaboration with multiple working areas. Spaces to accommodate different user groups for focused work areas and also breakout desk-free areas.

The bright colours and themed artwork found throughout the office were inspired by the beauty of nature, helping to guide people through the space and maintain a positive flow—the use of vibrant and symbolic colours to enhance mood and encourage positive psychology.

On-site construction of the new offices took 11 weeks to complete this modern prefabricated office space.
The materials to prefabricate and finish the office interior architecture were carefully considered to ensure superior acoustic sound-absorbing properties. We worked collaboratively with the architect and the Trust to create a bespoke modular environment strategically.
For improved sustainability and to support the changing working methods, the new technology installed ensured accessibility and energy savings.
Staff now work in modern, functional, high-spec spaces which are accessible, sustainable and stimulating. They feel proud of their working environment, whether they are working at their desks, grabbing a coffee in the kitchen area, or coming together in one of the inspiring meeting rooms.
“The brief solved the problems staff faced before, namely a lack of storage; departments working remotely and individually; dated office environments that were no longer fit for purpose; and non-descript spaces. They now enjoy functional, zoned spaces that provide a healthy environment, increasing the wellbeing and productivity of the workforce.
