Project Description

MPH Building Systems were appointed by The Holt School as Main Contractor to design, construct and install a new modular build teaching block comprising of:

  • ten classroom areas
  • ground and first floor staff offices
  • storage rooms
  • locker space
  • anti-bullying washroom facilities

The full turnkey contract also included a comprehensive external works package incorporating:

  • sub-structure foundation and excavation works
  • demolition and reinstatement of existing school buildings
  • site services installation
  • above and below ground drainage works
  • installation of external wheelchair access platform lift
  • construction of a temporary access road

From initial contract stage the MPH design team worked closely with the school, in conjunction with project building surveyors and Building Control, drawing up detailed plans to create an inspiring learning environment and appealing aesthetic featuring open spaces and natural light.

Full height powder coated aluminium architectural glazing was specified to the main entrance area alongside a gallery style stainless steel staircase with glazed balustrades and complementary decoration scheme. An energy efficient mechanical and electrical scheme throughout included comfort cooling air conditioning and central heating systems.

Achieving project completion dates within the challenging timetable set by the school was critical to the overall success. Integrating modular and traditional build techniques, the units were constructed to a high performance specification in the fast-track production phase and finished on site with a combination of traditional brick, render and insulated rain screen cladding.

Exceeding energy performance targets, the bespoke design achieves outstanding thermal performance. Scheduled for construction from October to January, the advantages of modern modular construction technologies were further highlighted as the efficient 16 week build programme remained mostly unaffected by adverse weather conditions on site.

“It is hard to believe that we are less than two weeks away from the opening of our new teaching block and it is looking fantastic. To think that we only heard that our bid was successful last April; here we are in February, with all the final touches being made, and the humanities teachers very busy packing and moving into their wonderful new rooms … “

Operating as Main Contractor on a fully functioning school site, construction phase health and safety responsibilities and challenging site access issues were overseen by our experienced site management team.
